Dickson Emeritus Professorship Award
The Dickson Emeritus Professor Award acknowledges, publicizes, and enables the creative and innovative work that our faculty continue to do after retiring. Up to three awards are given annually. The award may be used for activities in service, research (including creative works and performances) or teaching. Dickson Professors are expected to make the results of their work available to the campus or the wider community. See Award Guidelines for more information.
Current Dickson Emeritus Professors (2025-26)
Faye Crosby, Psychology Department
Project Title: Effective Mentoring Circles for Post-Doctoral Women in STEMM

Professor Emerita Crosby will utilize her Dickson Award to organize and co-facilitate two workshops: one for postdoctoral scholars and one for a mix of assistant professors and postdoctoral scholars. In 2023-24, former Dickson Award recipient Emerita Professor Susan Strome demonstrated the effectiveness of a specific method of residential workshops used for replenishing a sense of efficacy and purpose in senior women in STEMM fields. Professor Emeriti Crosby will expand on Strome’s work to determine if the method is effective among STEMM scholars at a more junior level, specifically at the postdoctoral level. Workshop participants will be drawn from UC campuses and will be interviewed about their experiences in the workshops.
Anatole Leikin, Music Department
Project Title: Publication of The Performing Style of Alexander Scriabin, in Russian (Исполнительский стиль Александра Скрябина) by Academic Studies Press

Professor Emeritus Leikin’s book, The Performing Style of Alexander Scriabin, was published by Ashgate Publishing and then reprinted by Routledge in hardback, paperback, and e-book formats. This book about Scriabin, a celebrated Russian composer and pianist (1872-1915), has received highly positive reviews in the press and was repeatedly praised as a “groundbreaking work.” The Dickson Award will allow Professor Leikin to publish his book in Russian within the Academic Studies Press’s Contemporary Western Rusistica series. The monograph will become the first full-length book in Russian language that examines Alexander Scriabin’s unique performance style that immensely impressed his contemporaries.
Bruce Lyon, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department
Project Title: Behavior and Ecology of the Horned Coot in the High Andean Wetlands of Argentina

The Dickson Award will enable Professor Emeritus Lyon to study investigates the reproductive biology of a rare and virtually unstudied bird, the horned coot, that breeds in high elevation wetlands in the Andes of Argentina. His decade long study of the closely related American coot revealed a rich assortment of parental and offspring behaviors, all of which are connected to the importance of food limitation for offspring. From a purely scientific perspective, the study will contribute to a general understanding of the evolution of reproductive strategies in birds.

Information About Retirement
Faculty contemplating retirement should consult with the Benefits Office at least three months in advance of the prospective date. It is not unreasonable to start planning retirement well in advance, several months or even years ahead of the possible date. The Benefts office can provide important information and is happy to advise Faculty so that they can make careful, well informed decisions.
After retirement emeritus faculty are sometimes recalled to service to teach courses. Although compensation is by mutual agreement there is a recommended salary scale.
