COMMITTEE ON COMMITTEES
Proposed Extension of Special Committee on Merit Equity

To the Academic Senate, Santa Cruz Division:

The Committee on Committees requests that the term of the Special Committee on Merit Equity Review be extended beginning retroactive to January 1, 1999 to August 31, 2000. (By an oversight the committee’s charge was extended only through December 31, 1998.)

Explanation: The Special Committee on Merit Equity Review has recently completed its statistical analysis of data on the salaries and appointment levels of Senate members, which it presented at the winter meeting, in February 1999. Questions were raised there, and subsequently to Committee members, about the interpretation of the data. The Special Committee finds that it requires more time to address these issues and come to a clearer statement of the possible ramifications of its findings. Given the importance of the issues addressed, the Committee wishes to prepare an addendum to that report in the 1999-2000 academic year, further clarifying the results and placing them in the broader perspective of similar gender and minority findings at other academic institutions.

Respectfully submitted:
