General Education Reform Guidelines for Departments

The result of a three-year reform effort, UCSC's general education requirements will be very different beginning Fall 2010.

This page provides information about the new general education requirements:

New General Education Requirements: Descriptions and Educational Goals

If you want to propose a GE course (that isn't DC-related), learn about the educational objectives at the quick guide table, then get the course approval form here.

If you want to propose a Disciplinary Communication curriculum for a major, review the guidelines and get the form. DC curricula are approved by CEP by the normal catalog copy submission process with an early December deadline.

If you are interested in developing a course that will help satisfy a student's Disciplinary Communication requirement, you can propose the course following the normal course proposal process, and have your department include the course in a revised DC curriculum statement for the catalog.

December 1:  Deadline for course and major sponsoring units to submit their Disciplinary Communication and General Education proposals to their dean's office.

December 8:  Deadline for dean's to forward proposals to CEP.
