To the Academic Senate, Santa Cruz Division:

The UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) is the largest, honors level, academic study abroad program in the United States. It is a universitywide program under the direction of Professor John Marcum. The universitywide office, in Santa Barbara, is funded by the Office of the President, and is under the academic oversight of the universitywide Senate EAP Committee (UCEAP) in keeping with UC’s tradition of "shared governance."

ATTACHMENT A: REVISION CEAP BY-LAW

CURRENT CEAP BY-LAW

 Committee on the Education Abroad Program

There are four Senate members, the Campus Coordinator for the Education Abroad Program (a Senate member appointed by the President) and no more than two student members. Where possible, preference in the selection of student members shall be given to former participants in EAP.

The Committee may concern itself with any aspect of the Education Abroad Program. It may take up related mattes concerning extramural study by Santa Cruz students and other questions referred to it by other committees and the Division. It may solicit opinion from boards of studies and members of the faculty. It may make direct representations to the University Committee on Education Abroad Program., the Director of the Education Abroad, Program, or other administrative officers or bodies of the Academic Senate on any appropriate matter concern the Education Abroad Program.

 

PROPOSED REVISION

Name Change to Committee on International Education

 Committee on the Education Abroad Program

The UCSC Committee on International Education shall consist of five Senate members, the Director of EAP, the coordinators of EAP/International Programs, and student representatives, one undergraduate and one graduate who shall not have the right to vote. Where possible, preference in the selection of student members shall be given to former participants in EAP.

The Committee will provide academic oversight of the Education Abroad Program and the International Programs. In consultation with academic departments and administrative units, the Committee will promote and develop programs for international education and exchanges. The Committee shall serve as an advisory committee for the identification and coordination of opportunities for global and transitional education collaboration, as well as international education planning and policy. In consultation with CEP, CPB, and the Graduate Council, the Committee shall aid in the determination of effective allocation of resources for International Education on the Santa Cruz campus.

The duties of the Committee shall be as follows:

  1. It shall represent the Division in all matters concerned with international education, including academic oversight of the Education Abroad Program and International Programs.
  2. It shall represent the Division in all aspects of international education and exchange.
  3. In consultation with the Administration, it shall formulate policies and programs that will serve to better integrate international education into the campus academic program.
  4. It shall, in consultation with academic units and administrative units, provide oversight of initiatives relating to international education and academic exchanges.
