COMMITTEE ON COMPUTING AND TELECOMMUNICAIONS
1999-2000 Annual Report

To the Academic Senate, Santa Cruz Division:

Committee Membership

Charles McDowell served as chair of the Senate Committee on Computing and Telecommunications (CCT) for 1999-2000. Yin-Wong Cheung (Economics), Ben Crow (Sociology), Joel Ferguson (Computer Engineering), Frank Galuska (Art), Eli Hollander (Film and Video), Darrell Long (Computer Science), and Geoffrey Pullum (Linguistics) served on the committee. Patrick Lecuyer ex officio (CATS), and Eric Jacobson (student representative) also served on the committee.

CCT met eight times during the past academic year. This committee is purely advisory, and as such, we discussed a number of computing and telecommunications related issues, with the hope of making recommendations to the Chancellor and the Senate.

The major issue for the year was the lack of direction for IT as a whole on the campus. For two years there has been essentially no campus wide direction of IT. In late August, 2000, Campus Provost Simpson announced the appointment of Larry Merkley as an IT consultant. It is our understanding the Larry Merkley has been appointed to serve for 2 years as an interim IT advisor for the entire campus. We plan to work closely with Larry Merkley during the next year to help define a new IT administrative process for the campus. This process is expected to include the appointment of a permanent high level administrator that reports directly to the Campus Provost.

We would also like to inform the Senate that the CATS budget deficit has been resolved. The deficit of $985,000 in the CATS annual operating budget has been resolved by three items:

This is summarized in the following table:
