COMMITTEE ON ACADEMIC FREEDOM
Proposed Change to Santa Cruz Bylaw
To The Academic Senate, Santa Cruz Division
Explanation
This year CAF discussed some issues of relevance to graduate students. We believe it is helpful to have a graduate student representative present when issues relevant to graduate students are discussed – and similarly for undergraduate students. We have made that explicit in the second sentence, which adopts the exact language of U. C. San Diego Bylaw 170A, the charge to the UCSD CAF. Note that this sentence includes an explicit statement of the Bylaw provisions (cf. SCB 13.4.1 and SB35) that restrict the right to vote in Senate committees to Senate members. We believe this will be helpful information, in view of the fact that there have been recent instances in which student representatives have been allowed to vote in Senate committees.
Current Proposed

13.9.1. There are four Santa Cruz Division members and no more than two student representatives. |
13.9.1. There shall be four Santa Cruz Division members. The Committee shall also have one undergraduate student representative and one graduate student representative, who shall not have the right to vote. |
